Harry Potter Party

Having Isla the end of May was wonderful in lots of ways- we mostly just hibernated all summer and didn't have to jump in the car every 5 minutes.  Nice to have family time with a newborn.  But there were downsides too and one of the biggest was putting all 3 boys in the same room so they wouldn't get woken up by her all night.  It stays light in Utah until almost 10pm in the summer and getting 3 little boys to go to sleep at 7:30 or 8:00 with so much light outside became pretty difficult.  We tried lots of things and the one that finally worked was to read a chapter or a few pages to them every night- in their  beds- in the dark.  This seemed to work because they called down enough to listen and once they did that it was really easy for them to just fall asleep.  Isaac was almost always asleep before I finished.  It took us a few months but we finally finished the first Harry Potter.  And as a reward we had a movie party.
Miles helped me make witch hat cookies.
He's no dummy- helping=getting to lick spoons!
On pinterest I found a great tutorial on making authentic wands.  Just use a skewer or chopstick, put hot glue on in any pattern you want and then paint with acrylic paint.  So easy and actually really neat looking.  I got the glue done but didn't have time for the paint to dry so I opted to save that for another day.  So our wands were all just white but the kids didn't seem to mind.  Miles ran around saying "spelliarmus" "trificus totalus".  So hilarious to see them duel!

Yep, Taylor got in on it too.
Then it was time for treats- Bertie's every flavor beans (just jelly bellys since no one wants gross tasting jelly beans) and pretzels dipped in chocolate and sprinkles for wands.
A good, family movie night.  And the kids were so excited for the party that they invited every single person who came into the backyard while they were out playing, which was actually a lot since Grams and Grandpa live next door and the aunts and uncles stop by occasionally.  So Uncle Arty joined the fun.  Can't wait til we finish the next book together!

What's the link for the wands? Summer would LOVE those. She uses anything long and narrow for a wand and goes around saying, "Expellarimus" or whatever the word is for the disarming charm (I think - it's been awhile since I've read them). I haven't let her watch the movies yet, but she did say the other day that her school for 2013 is to watch every single Harry Potter movie. We'll see.
