Some projects of my own

In July when my brother and his family came to visit, one of the things the kids spent a lot of time doing was having Madeline draw things for them. She's 6 and that makes her an EXPERT in drawing (at least from a 4 and 5 year olds perspective). Ethan was especially fascinated by the crayon carrier Necia made for each of her kids for the trip. He begged and begged so finally we found some time this week to go grab the necessary fabric (necessary in this case meant Toy Story characters) and then it took just an hour to whip them up today. Really super easy and less than 1/4 yard of 50% off fabric each so pretty cheap too.
The other thing Ethan has been begging for is more playmats. We found some micro machine army men, tanks, planes, and helicopters at a yard sale recently and he has wanted a mat to play with them on. So here's the finished product. One desert mat and one airport complete with airplane hangers, runways, and helicopter pads.
These things have been played with non-stop for the past 2 days. Looks like it was worth my time.
And since I was already making more mats, I decided to make one for the dinosaurs and the zoo animals that we already have.
All 4 mats have zippers on the back to keep all the little toys in. Can't wait to use them on the airplanes next week!

Paper Bag Puppets

Today when we picked Ethan up from his preschool, Isaac started begging to go to a park. Unfortunately for him it's 100 degrees outside and I'm just not up for it. He was a little (read LOT) upset until I suggested we all do a project together. And then it was all smiles and laughing in the car. This whole project idea has been great although we haven't done as many as I thought we would, it's nice to be able to pull something out of a box and just do it together. Plus the boys love every minute of it.
Ethan chose to make a panda bear. And Isaac wanted a regular bear.
The newest complication to our projects is that Miles won't stay where I left him- he comes to join the party! And loves to grab (and eat) whatever errant glue stick, marker or piece of paper that gets accidentally dropped. Lovely!
Not sure how much use they'll get before the glued on pieces start falling off and I have to throw them away so Miles doesn't choke on the little pieces, but they're adorable for now- at least in a scary-looking-toddler-made-it-kind-of-adorable-way.

How adorable are these two???

I couldn't resist posting a few of Jeff and Jessica's cute engagement photos. And teasing them a little- Jeff's full name is Jeffrey Paul Kitchen and Jessica's is Jessica Kelly Paul. If she keeps her last name in place of her middle and takes Kitchen, their names will only differ by two letters- Jeff and Jess. He's begging her to keep Kelly instead but we've been teasing him a little.
We're so excited we've been here with them the past year and have gotten to know Jessica. She's a chemical engineering major- WAY smarter than my brother and that's saying a lot. She runs crazy races like the Ragnar all nighter from Logan to Park City. And she and Jeff are very cute together. They have a lot of fun and we can't wait for August 21st!

Too keep little fingers from touching the walls...

... there was lots of game playing...
...and lots of snacks strapped into high chairs...
... and lots of swimming with cousins. (these 2 are just 2 months apart and fascinated by the same things.)
... and more swimming.

Pioneer Day

With all the painting and cooking we didn't take much time for really celebrating the pioneers this year, but we did pause to take in a REAL Soccer game and the fireworks afterwards.
A big surprise- our section won the Burger King giveaway of the night so we all got free whopper coupons and these amazingly fun pom pom that accessorize quite nicely with Ethan's hair.
Miles couldn't get enough of them either.
And Isaac couldn't resist doing it if Ethan did it- sadly, it makes him look WAY too much like a girl. Poor cute boy with long lashes and curly hair.
In the past we've stayed up in our seats for the fireworks but tonight decided to join everyone down on the field. It was a hit and we'll definitely be doing that again! Happy Pioneer Day everyone! (Sorry you don't get a day off if you're not in Utah)

My mother (the saint)

Please pardon my lack of blogging lately- we've been VERY busy. Can I just say my mother is a saint? She gives and gives and serves and serves and never stops. Originally she was only in charge of planning a reunion this summer for her siblings and the 100+ kids and grandkids. Only that. Nothing much.
Then she was asked to coordinate all the food for her stake's girl's camp this year- that included figuring out how much food was needed, buying it all, getting it all there, cooking it all, serving it all, and cleaning up after it all. And of course she did that without hesitation.
Back in October when Miles was born she came out to help and was truly appalled by the overwhelming amount of navy blue in my house. Whoever was here before must have REALLY loved that exact blue color. 2 walls in the office were blue, ALL the walls in the kitchen, ALL the walls in the dining room, and even the front door was blue. Oh, and the kitchen counter is the same blue but in tiles :). Lots and lots of blue. Now I like blue as well as the next person, but come on, can we have some variety please???
So when my mom was here with baby Miles we picked out some paint and then decided he was too young (like 3 days old) so maybe we shouldn't expose him to all the paint fumes. So the paint sat lonely in the basement until this past week when my mom came to help teach me how to paint and ended up doing most of it herself since my 3 boys are very busy and needy right now.
Say goodbye to the blue.
And more blue. Ignore the spots- that was just my camera.
And hello to golden-yellow!
Ethan and Isaac were fascinated with what we were doing so my mom was nice enough to let them help (after first making sure the drop cloth was securely in place).
Isaac giggled the whole time she let him hold the roller.
And they spent most of 2 days in this exact position watching us.
Miles was a little more sneaky and found a way through the blockade. Of course he picked this very inopportune time to decide to start crawling. Can you see the look of sheer joy on his face that he's gotten himself into such an amazing place! If you notice, the paint changed from the room above. That's because THEY GAVE US THE WRONG COLOR- TWICE!!! Apparently at Home Depot, they can only print their brochures using 4 colors (a red hue being the one missing) so when you hand them their own brochure and point to the perfect color you have spent hours choosing, they cannot match it exactly (even though they tell you they can) and it will in fact contain TONS MORE RED than you want!!!
So I picked out a color called peanut butter which was a yellowy brown gold and instead it was PEACH! Full on peach! Two trips to Home Depot and another full paint job later we finally got a color I like. So just to pass on the wisdom I gained, they can match the swatches and the squares that peel out of their brochures because those are actually spray painted on and then glued in. Just don't trust anything that doesn't peel out.
Everyone was a little worn out after all the painting.
But of course, my saintly mother wasn't about to quit yet. Just to make her summer extra crazy my youngest brother got engaged the last week of June and they're getting married August 21st. Not too much work for the mother of the groom you would assume, but then they asked her to cook all the food for the reception- and they're sending out 400 invitations alone to her family and friends from her hometown where the reception is. Who knows how many will come, but my mom got started while she was here and thankfully we were able to track down a few family members with open freezer space for the next month.
400 pecan tassies. Check!
These are a classic in our home and even though they're a lot of work, they look great...
and taste even better! See what I'm talking about with all the blue, blue, blue.
But happily now the blue tiles are surrounded in the dining room by brown and taupe.
And brown in the whole kitchen.
Of course there are about a million touch-ups to finish and just other things that still need to be changed (notice the burn marks on the wood above the gas stove. Someone very brilliant built that it a little too close for my comfort.)
A view of the office all put back together.
And a painted living room. Ignore the blue tape- Taylor is convinced we need to paint in between the crown moldings. I agree it would look nice to do that- but I'm a little painted out. At least for now.
So a big thank you to my saintly mother who painted, cleaned, cooked, and loved on my little boys for the past week and a half. Our house finally looks like a house and not some ode to Cookie Monster or the Blue Man Group (which incidentally, we looked like for several days after all the sanding of blue walls).

Orange Team vs. Black Team

On the south end of the field for the Orange team we have Isaac in the goalie box and Oscar as the full back.
And on the north end is the black team represented by Grams as the goalie and occasional midfielder with Ethan as the forward.
Sometimes we miss the ball entirely when we kick.
Sometimes we forget our positions and all chase after the ball together.
But we're ALWAYS happy to play soccer with Grams in the backyard!
(Can you tell soccer is our favorite sport around here?)

Project: Marshmallow and Straws

We've been doing a lot of this lately:
Because I (and my little helper Isaac) have been doing a lot of this lately:
(and laundry and scrubbing and dishes and organizing and gardening)
And since I can't expect these 3 boys to play nicely by themselves or read all day, I pulled out one of our quick projects. Marshmallow and straw building.
At first they were very intent on building (okay I admit I was too) and then Isaac discovered that the mallows tasted good and spent most of the rest of the time eating the mallows on the table and the mallows in the bag and the mallows attached to his own buildings and then everyone else's too and that caused a few problems. What can you expect from a 2 year old who like to tease?
Miles missed out on the project but he spent a lot of time doing this. He's still not quite sure why he'd want to get up on his knees and now even up on all fours, but he can, so he does. And then he gets really mad like someone else MADE him do this and he hates it. I'm still refusing to teach him how to crawl so he'll just have to figure it out on his own.

Hiking Y Mountain

I come from a family of avid hikers so when Necia asked Jim what he'd like to do for his birthday, he said "hike Y mountain". We agreed to come along although Taylor only agreed as long as he was allowed to sing the U of U fight song the whole way and wear U of U red from head to toe. He also dressed Ethan and Isaac up in their U of U red football jerseys (which I quickly changed them out of). In the end though he wore a neutral white t-shirt and kept saying "I'm no dummy, those BYU fans are crazy!" Miles and Ethan ended up still wearing U of U baseball caps though since that's all we had that fit them and in the end we did get several comments from other hikers annoyed that we'd dare bring THAT attire on their mountain. I'm a proud BYU grad but come on. Get over it.
Looks easy on the first switch-back right?
And then it starts to look a little more like this.
We woke up at 6:30 on Saturday and had all the kids in the cars by 7 to drive down with breakfast on the way. We started about 8:30 which was perfect because the east side of the mountain was completely shaded until almost 10:00 by which time we'd made it all the way up and partway down. It's 1.2 miles up to the Y and steep most of the way.
There's a great view from the top even if you feel like you're sitting on marshmallow rocks.
We made it! Cheesy grins, snacks, and all.
After just 2 minutes of sitting Isaac decided he needed to throw rocks, of course he couldn't just throw the pebbles so we decided we had to keep moving up to the top.
Miles got to ride the whole way and Taylor was a good sport for carrying him and the pack and our water and all the snacks.
The whole group minus Jeff who is taking the picture.
Happy Valley below.
The other fun reason for hiking the Y was that Jeff and his new fiance Jessica could come along. They're both seniors at BYU and were so helpful carrying/dragging the 2, 2-year-olds up the mountain. Aren't they cute?
And to celebrate Jim's birthday and our triumphant hike we went to Los Hermanos afterwards. Good food, good hiking, good views, good family=a good day. And everyone taking good naps afterwards didn't hurt either.
Post naps, post swimming. Don't they look worn out?
