Romania

When we originally scheduled the trip we were just going to stay 1 week, but then Taylor's dad had the bright idea to add on their yearly golf trip and so the guys were going to stay 10 days but Sonia and I still go back.  Thankfully Sonia volunteered to watch my kids at night if I'd just arrange daytime care for them so I got to stay with the boys for the rest of the trip.  About 2 weeks before the trip, Taylor got a call from Delta letting him know that his mom's flight home had been cancelled and so we had to scramble to find another option.  In the end we found she could fly out of Romania easier and since it was just 2 hours north of Ruse, we could easily make it.
So we drove north along miles and miles of these hot water pipes coming from the nuclear reactor and heading out to all the communist block homes for their heating.
Kind of bizarre to see so many nuclear reactors.
And here's Taylor driving across the Danube for the first time ever.  He got to see it lots as a missionary in Ruse, but never cross it.
And then we were across the river (which was actually not that big) and into what seemed like another world.  Everyone assumes that Romania is more economically advanced that Bulgaria, but it didn't seem that way to us.  There are lots more gypsies and lots more poverty.
And random herding of animals on main roads.
Since we were going to HAVE to go to Romania to drop Sonia at the airport, why not go a little farther north and really explore the castles.
Sadly none of us checked and of course Peles castle is closed on Tuesdays.  But just the inside so we still got to see the outside.

Just breathtaking, and I guess we'll just have to go back someday (not on a Tuesday) to see the inside.

And just for fun there were random workers collecting hay with huge, old fashioned pitch forks.

And after enough outside the castle fun, we set off to see Bran castle which is supposedly the castle that Dracula lived in.  It's situated at a really neat location right between two valleys on a big hill.  It overlooks a huge valley full of red roofed homes and grassy farms.
It's just plain cool looking.
And quite a hike to get up to.

And luckily we were able to go inside this one.
Interesting to see the modern-ish conveniences they've added.
Mingled with the original architecture and charm.
The number of staircases was just insane- like 24 or something.  Rooms hidden above and around and very confusing to know where you are.
