Bingham Canyon Mine

We woke up to the sound of rain on our roof and in the trees outside and it has continued steadily all day. So for our Monday adventure I decided we'd brave the outdoors just a little and visit Bingham Canyon Mine. This was formerly called Kennecott Copper Mine. The drive was a little intense with bizarrely foggy/cloudy conditions and it took a full hour to get there which surprised me since the mine is just in the southwest corner of Salt Lake valley and we're in the Northeast. Who knew the valley was so huge? Luckily I have 3 boy-boys and the mine did not disappoint one bit. Even Miles kept saying "wooooowwww". More to copy the other boys but cute none the less. You get to drive through part of the open pit mine and then there's a Visitor Center and an overlook of the main pit. This tire is off of one of the "haul trucks" that we refered to as monster trucks. They're basically huge dump trucks and they're so big that the driver has to climb a set of 20 stairs to just get into the cab. Trust me we know since Ethan made sure to count them all. If you want a true perspective, look at how small the kids are next to the tire, then look at the last picture and see how small the monster truck is next to the mine behind it. Crazy!
The Visitor Center was really neat but of course the boys prefered being outside in the rain watching the action. You drive through this part which was very impressive.
And then you come around the curve to this... they've literally carved out the mountain. It's 3/4 of a mile deep!

The boys were fascinated by these trucks so we watched them getting filled by large diggers and then driving up and down and around all the roads and finally to where they dump car size boulders into a machine that crushes them to the size of basketballs. Ethan was most impressed by the fact we read that just one of these trucks could hold 6 humpback whales. He kept repeating this to me in an astonished voice and as we drove away he finally asked me- "mom, why do they put whales in the trucks?"
So who really knows what they learned from our little adventure but they loved it! Did you know that the mine is so big you can see it from space?

Spring Break 2011

This year we're trying to keep our Spring Break a little more low key than last year's half-way around the world in 7 days trip. I think we'll all be happier that way and much less sleep deprived :). But since we've been keeping such busy schedules with work and school(s) and activities, I knew the boys would be going stir crazy if we just stayed around the house so I planned 1 little outing for each day. Saturday we woke up bright and early (okay so we do this everyday, but whatever) and walked half a block to 21st South where we watched and cheered for several of our friends as they ran the Salt Lake City Marathon. Then we all went and had breakfast at McDonalds. Yep, we're THOSE people! It was actually really neat to watch the race and though you can't see it from the picture very well, 21st South slopes downhill and we had an amazing view of thousands of people as they ran. The highlight was Isaac surprising my visiting teacher whom he LOVES and watching her laugh and wave at him as he tried to enter the race to get to "shishter Glowsher". Later that day we went to cheer on Ethan's soccer team the "Sharks" which actually is Taylor's team now too since he's taken over coaching and reffing duties for the other coach who has a 3 month old and 3 older kids and a husband in medical school residence- yep we thought she deserved some help.
Taylor's actually really cute with the kids- cheering them on and helping them get where they need to be. It's especially cute to see him tease the one little girl on their team "I promise, you run faster if you smile too."
The kids are getting better at dribbling and following the flow of the ball and it's fun to be with the same group of parents on the sidelines.
A good first day of Spring Break.

Sunday's adventure you ask? A trip to church! Isn't that ENOUGH of an adventure for any parent of 3 kids under 6! Thankfully Miles is finally fully 18 months and can legally be left in the nursery- this is when I break out into the Hallelujah chorus. Darn, it's just a blog so you missed that didn't you.

No Nuts for me!

So Guess who else is allergic to nuts in our house? Yep, that would be this poor little blondie. Several times over the past few months we've woken up and found Ethan in his little corner of the toy room sitting on his tiny couch reading books. What a wonderful kid I thought! He's up early which is fine since he's quiet and he's even reading books to himself. So when he later asked if he could get himself a snack in the morning if he was up early and hungry I said yes. And later discovered that his snack of choice was mixed nuts- which most of the time he ate all of them but sometimes they fell behind the couch or under a book. We knew this because Isaac has brought them to us to throw out (thankfully he's old enough to know what nuts are and that he shouldn't eat them). And so we've had lots of discussions with Ethan about the danger of nuts to Isaac. And so Ethan's been more careful. Unfortunately, on Monday I woke up with the cleaning itch and decided to dive into my spring cleaning. So I moved and vacuumed under the toy room couch and of course I was followed the whole time by one little blondie who wanted to pick up and play with everything I was moving. Somehow in the shuffle of things I think he found (and ate) a nut before I found it. He was throwing up less than an hour after I'd started but of course I didn't realize what had happened (I just thought he had the flu) until hours later when he woke up with this wicked rash and then was able to keep down 2 bottles and 5 pieces of toast. He was very insistent that's what he wanted. So not the flu if you just throw up twice in quick succession and then end up with a crazy rash. I may not be the sharpest mom out there unfortunately. He never had trouble breathing though which is the same with Isaac's allergy, they both seem to throw up, then swell up. Poor things. Thankfully there's Benadryl. And thankfully it works!
He was fine and running around, rash and everything gone within a few hours of the Benadryl. Breaks your heart to see him like this though.

Mom and Ethan Night Out

Sometimes it's hard to pay attention to one child when the other 2 are so loud, so when we get the chance to have one-on-one time, we jump at it. My Visiting Teaching companion put together a benefit concert for a service organization and I wanted to go and support her. We didn't really want to shell out for a babysitter so Taylor stayed home with the littles and Ethan and I had a night out on the town.
Truly it was a lot of fun. He was mesmerized by the band for the first song or two and then he was up in his chair and going crazy dancing along.
A few months ago he and I went to a bilingual theatre production of Alladin. So fun to see his wide eyes with the singing and dancing and the magic of the stage. Also fun to see him understand all the Spanish they were speaking and have him explain it to me. It's nice to be able to focus of him and get to experience things for the first time with him.

Where have we been?!?

The better question may be where HAVEN'T we been? Life has been crazy lately so I'm sorry we've kind of fallen off of the blogger world. Sadly it was a combination of getting behind on blogging at Christmas and in January, then the death of a camera in March, and then just everyday busy life. A few weeks ago Taylor's mom was cleaning out some drawers and found a paper she'd left for a babysitter years ago when she and Jeff had gone away for the weekend. It detailed when to pick up and drop off each kid and filled an entire page in small writing. She handed it to me laughing and I just stared in horror. Pick up this one, drop off that one, literally all day from 4:45 am (maybe I'm rethinking allowing my kids to be swimmers- 4:45 is NIGHT TIME, morning absolutely should NEVER start before 5AM and even that is insane!) to after 7pm. Not looking forward to that life. Sadly, it's sort of started for us already. Here's my basic Tuesday/Thursday schedule: 8:30 drop Ethan at Kindergarten 9:30 drop Isaac at Joyschool (unless I'm teaching) 11:20 pick Ethan up/make lunches to eat in the car 12:00 pick up Isaac 12:30 drop Ethan at Spanish school/naps- Yeah! 3:30 pick up Ethan/go home/do homework 4:30 swim lessons for Ethan and Isaac I'm already feeling like I spend my days in the car and can't wait for Isaac and Miles to learn to buckle themselves in.

So where have we been? Here- at the pool! And we love it. The real reason we've added daily swim lessons to the crazyness of our lives is that our backyard is connected to and open to Taylor's parent's backyard. They are in essence just one BIG backyard and his parents have both a pool and hottub in their yard. Several times this fall and winter, we caught the kids walking across the cover- sometimes with water or ice on it and sometimes without. But each time they seemed to think they were perfectly safe and this greatly disturbed Taylor who had several friends growing up drown in pools and he started having nightmares our kids would die drowning. So while it's been a bit of an added burden to get kids to and from the pool and dressed and undressed, it's helped Taylor's peace of mind.

And Ethan's got a killer backstroke so we've got that to show for our 3 months of swim lessons too!

Ethan's Kindergarten Animal Program

Ethan's Kindergarten teacher is a genious. Do the Kindergarten program in March instead of May! Then everyone can make it and it's not adding to the crazyness of the end of year!
So the whole Kindergarten sang animal songs. His school has a full time music teacher so he gets to go once and week and definitely looks forward to Wednesdays because of this. The program was cute and it was nice that he was front and center so I could get good shots of him even though they're just taken with my phone.
Tragically the cute video won't load so you're missing out. But a cute program all around.

Bon Jovi, Baby!

Over the years Taylor and I have talked about which artists we like and which concerts we'd love to go to. So a few months back Taylor surprised me when he brought home tickets to see Bon Jovi. I'm not ashamed to admit I grew up in the 90's and LOVE them!

It was a school night so we were thankful that Taylor's mom would watch our kids so we could go be crazy teenagers again screaming and singing along and laughing at all the drunk people around us.

SO MUCH FUN!!!
