Sofia

And finally at noon on Saturday we got to Sofia.  Really our detour made us miss one monastery that Taylor and his parents had already seen so I was fine with our little detour.  Here's our view from our hotel.  Things are pretty cheap in Bulgaria which was nice for a change.
Taylor had plans to meet up with one of his converts and since we wouldn't get another chance to see the capital, I headed off with his parents to do some exploring.  Coming from the US, it's just astounding the amount of really old history in all these places.
And a lot of it's just lying around exposed to the elements.
The cathedrals are also just over the top.

Under communism, there were lots of people put to work as artists just because they could.  So as you walk around the city there are just thousands of statues- literally everywhere, in random parks, everywhere.  And behind and around them the architecture is just breathtaking.  Who knows what this statue means but it was one of literally hundreds so you should thank me for only including this one.
