My sister lives just 10 hours away in Washington State and it's hard to believe that it's been almost 2 years since our last trip up there. Last year I had a newborn so that's my excuse :) But this year nothing was stopping us from going to visit them. And since she and her husband could get a few days off for the 4th of July, that seemed the perfect time to go. Taylor has missed way too many days of work already this year so I left Tuesday morning to drive up with the kiddies and Taylor flew up Wednesday night. It's just 10 hours but with Isla being so little I decided to stop halfway in Boise and make a trip of it.
These boys look ready to go- ipods in hand, headphones on.
This one was not so sure she had agreed to 10 hours in a car but at least she had brothers to look at and entertain her if she had to still be rear facing- she's still a 16 pound lightweight at 14 months. We'll see if she ever gets to turn around forward. The drive was not bad at all. Isla napped. The boys played ipods. We stopped after 2 1/2 hours for ice cream and a playground at McDonald's. We got into Boise in the late afternoon, took our stuff in and then headed back out to pick up pizza for dinner. The plan was to swim afterwards. Alas, 1 poor sweetheart wasn't feeling so good and threw up all over her carseat on the way to pizza. So I got the pizza, dragged everyone in the hotel, washed Isla off and got her settled into her crib in the bathroom to go to sleep, handed out pizza to the boys after thoroughly washing everyone's hands, THEN I got the lovely task of trying to clean throw up off a carseat in 95 degree heat with only baby wipes. Yep, not that successful. And the whole time my kiddos were flying solo in the hotel room so I was trying to be quick. Isla was miserable and I was afraid she'd keep throwing up all night and need multiple baths and she'd wake everyone up each time, plus it was only 6pm and she needed to sleep but the boys didn't, so I put her crib in the bathroom and cranked her white noise machine. She slept through us sneaking in to use the potty thankfully and slept the whole night. Who knows what made her sick that one time but I'm glad it wasn't more than that.
We hung around the hotel the next morning so she could get a morning nap.
Giraffe- okay we'll pose for one picture.
But really it's more fun to play than look at animals.
Except for maybe this lion. He stayed there and watched my boys for as long as they were interested.
And then they were bored and would rather climb on inanimate objects.
This T-Rex was motion activated and would only roar and move when you came close. The boys thought he was real and kept trying to sneak up on him.
The prairie dogs were a favorite as usual.
And we visited a butterfly house. We've been to other butterfly houses before and the workers are mostly there to check that no butterflies hitch a ride with you out the door. In this one, the workers all had squirt bottles and kept running around like crazy people. Apparently a group of wasps had invaded the butterfly house and were stinging the butterflies so they could kill them. Not sure why. The workers were too busy to really explain but it was a little freaky watching wasps attack.
After the zoo we got back in the car only to be blown away by the stench of a carseat not cleaned out well enough that had sat and baked in the sun for 2 hours. I really needed a washing machine and a hose but being at the hotel by myself is my excuse. So a quick trip to Walmart for febreeze and air fresheners at least made the next 5 hours bearable. Until we picked up Taylor at the airport and he refused to drive anywhere without stopping to chuck the carseat and buy her a new one. It really was amazingly smelly and bizarre how she managed to get nastiness into every nook and cranny and fold of the seat. Why are there so many tiny holes and plastic parts???
We made it into Kelli and Dana's late and let everyone crash for the night.
